Chapter Three: The Fanged Flattooth

His mother was dead. “No!” he cried. He hugged her head. She wasn’t moving. He knew that she was dead, but he couldn’t quite bring himself to believe it. What now? How would he make it to the Great Valley now? What about the Four Kinds Quest?
The Four Kinds Quest! This was it! This was how he could honor her memory! “I’ll find the Great Valley! I promise! I’ll find four different Leaf Eaters, four different Sharpteeth, four different Egg Stealers, and four different Bothteeth before my 25th Hatch Day! I won’t let you down! I’ll be the Great One! I promise!” he vowed. There was nothing more he could do for his mother, so, with regret, he left her. As he left, an aftershock from the Great Earthshake caused the ledge he and his mother had been on to break. He body fell into a crevice and was buried with rocks. That had been close! If he’d stayed there a minute later, he’d have been buried too. At least her body would never be harmed by Sharpteeth now. He set off, looking for the Great Valley.
