Chapter 1: The Trip
“What a great day to have a great day!” Ruby beamed with happiness as she stepped out of her cave and took in a deep breath through her nose and let it out slowly.
The Bright Circle had yet to wake up, so it was still dark and a little chilly.
Chomper slowly trudged out behind her, wrapping his little arms around himself and rubbing his eyes sleepily. He gave a big yawn, then blinked and looked up at Ruby.
“Why do we need to get up so early, Ruby?” Chomper asked her in a tired voice, “it’s still dark!”
“We want to get across the Scorching Plains before it gets too hot for our feet.” Ruby explained patiently, with a big smile and twinkling eyes.
They were going to surprise Ruby’s parents with a visit and she was excited to get going.
“I guess.” Chomper sighed and the two friends began heading out of the Great Valley.
Chomper began to feel nervous as they left the safety of the Great Valley.
“It’s kinda spooky out here.” He mumbled, almost tripping in the darkness.
“Well, I’m not scared at all!” Ruby spoke confidently.
“Really?” Chomper looked up at her in amazement, “why not?”
“Because,” Ruby smiled down at him warmly, “I’ve got you here to protect me!”
Chomper smiled back, puffed out his chest and straightened up, walking taller and feeling much braver.
Chapter 2: Mistaken Identity
Littlefoot was also up very early that day, but not as early as Ruby and Chomper had been. He was eating breakfast this morning and his grandparents had remarked on how much bigger and taller he looked today and this thought had made him very happy.
Now, he was on his way to tell Cera the great news! Littlefoot didn’t like being small for his age, as Grampa Longneck had once said to him, so he was in a hurry to let everyone know that he had grown.
“Huh?” Littlefoot stopped along the path that would lead him to Cera’s home, because he saw something he was not expecting to see today. It was his friend, Chomper.
Littlefoot changed direction and turned toward the little Sharptooth, puzzled but happy to see Chomper regardless.
“Hey, Chomper!” Littlefoot called out to his friend, bounding over to him with a smile, “I thought you and Ruby were going to see her parents today, did she change her mind?”
But as he stood and looked down at Chomper, Littlefoot thought his friend seemed a lot smaller than he was used to. Littlefoot didn’t mention it, Chomper was just as sensitive about being called little as he was himself.
It’s just because I’m bigger now, Littlefoot thought, that’s why Chomper looks smaller.
But Chomper seemed startled by Littlefoot’s approach and had taken a step or two back from him, his eyes stared up at Littlefoot, big and wide.
“Are you okay, Chomper?” Littlefoot wondered, “what’s wrong?”
But the little Sharptooth said nothing and continued to back away.
Chapter 3: The Misadventure Begins
Littlefoot did not follow Chomper at first, he was worried that somehow he might have upset Chomper but he couldn’t think of any reason why the little Sharptooth would back away from him like that.
So, Littlefoot decided to go after Chomper.
“Chomper!” Littlefoot called and hurried to catch up, because the little Sharptooth was headed into the Mysterious Beyond, “Chomper, wait up! Where are you going?”
The little Sharptooth heard the rumbling sounds behind him and glanced back over his shoulder. Littlefoot had no idea but this was indeed a wild sharptooth baby and not his friend at all.
The little Sharptooth could not understand Littlefoot’s words, all he heard were rumblings and groans. He was not used to his food chasing after him, or making such strange sounds. It creeped him out, so he quickened his steps and tried to get away from Littlefoot because the leaf eater was simply too large for him to hunt by himself.
“I don’t understand.” Littlefoot said softly to himself, “why does he keep running away from me?” He looked back toward his home but kept going after Chomper, determined to make things right again, he couldn’t stand the thought of having any of his friends being angry with him.
Chapter 4: Into the Mysterious Beyond
Littlefoot’s other friends had already gathered together and were waiting for him near Cera’s home, but he hadn’t arrived and they were beginning to worry.
“Maybe he is still asleep?” Ducky suggested.
“Well, we’d better go and wake him up.” Cera grumbled, impatiently.
Cera led the way, followed by Spike, Ducky and Petrie. It wasn’t long before they spotted Littlefoot just up ahead but he appeared to be leaving the Great Valley.
“Hey, where’s he going?” Cera frowned in surprise and she became quickly annoyed, “and without us??”
Ducky and Petrie glanced at each other, just as puzzled as Cera. They were sitting on Spike’s back and held on tightly as Spike hurried to catch up to Cera, who was now bounding after Littlefoot.
“Littlefoot!” Cera called out loudly, “hey! Wait for us!”
Littlefoot heard Cera’s yell and paused, waiting for his friends to catch up to him. Cera puffed, a little out of breath.
“And just where do you think you’re going?” Cera demanded.
“It’s Chomper.” Littlefoot explained, “I think he’s.. running away.”
“Running away?” Cera was surprised, “why?”
“I’m not sure.” Littlefoot replied, “but we’ve gotta stop him, he’s headed into the Mysterious Beyond!”
So, without another word, the friends began to hurry after the little Sharptooth, hoping to stop him before something bigger and meaner stopped him first.
Chapter 5: That’s Not Chomper
“Have you noticed how big I am now, Cera?” Littlefoot boasted as they ran, “my Grandparents told me this morning, I’ve grown a lot!”
“You don’t look any bigger to me.” Cera frowned back.
“Maybe we all have grown?” suggested Ducky, for nobody looked any bigger to her, either.
“Hey, maybe we have!” Littlefoot grinned.
“Maybe.” Cera spoke as if she didn’t quite believe it, “but I’ve grown the biggest!”
The little Sharptooth was surprised to hear even more grumbling and groaning sounds coming up behind him, he glanced back and was shocked to see a whole group of leaf eaters chasing after him.
His legs were only small, so it wasn’t long before Cera, Littlefoot and Spike had him surrounded. He was forced to stop then, but he wasn’t at all happy about it.
Ducky looked at the little Sharptooth thoughtfully, she was confused because Chomper was bigger than this little guy. She said nothing, because they all knew how sensitive Chomper was about being called little and she didn’t want to upset him more than he already seemed to be. After all, they had all grown bigger and maybe Chomper just looked smaller because of that?
“Chomper.” Littlefoot tried again, “what’s wrong? Why do you keep running off?”
“Yeah.” Cera frowned, “didn’t you realize you were running into the Mysterious Beyond?”
The little Sharptooth was so confused by now, he was hungry, tired and frightened. He figured Ducky and Petrie would make a good meal but the bigger three leaf eaters would be too much for him to fight off by himself.
So, he did the only thing he could do at a time like this: He closed his eyes, titled back his head and let out a loud, long cry!
Littlefoot and the others were surprised by the strange sound.
“Uh.. Guys?” Littlefoot took a step back, “I don’t think that’s Chomper..”
Chapter 6: Danger in the Mysterious Beyond
Ducky gasped and put her hands over her face in alarm, Petrie gulped and Spike looked worried and gave a groan of fear. They weren’t afraid of the baby Sharptooth itself, they were afraid of whatever might have heard that loud, wailing cry.
Cera stomped her foot, hard.
“You had us chasing a wild Sharptooth?!” she demanded, angrily.
“I-I didn’t know!” Littlefoot stammered, confused and now worried as well, “I just thought he looked smaller because I’d grown so much, like my Grandparents told me!”
Cera was about to argue some more, when they heard huge, thundering roars and the ground shook a little with each great thud that came next. Footsteps, really big ones, were approaching and fast.
“Ohh noo!” Petrie groaned, his whole body trembling in fear, “that must be big Sharptooth!”
“Of course.” Littlefoot looked down at the tearful baby, “his parents must be nearby! Quick, everyone! Hide!”
They all looked around in a panic, there wasn’t anywhere for them to go except a small crack in the cliff nearby. They scrambled inside, squished and uncomfortable. Spike struggled to get his tail inside, hugging it close to his chest. Petrie held his beak down, flat against his chest to keep it from poking anyone.
Ducky felt crushed but she could breathe, so she didn’t complain. Within moments, the parent Sharpteeth came into view and inspected their baby. The little Sharptooth squeaked and growled, gesturing with his little claws in the direction he’d just come from.
Littlefoot got a frightened look on his face as he realized what was happening, because the adult Sharpteeth then quickly turned and headed in that same direction with their baby following closely behind.
“Oh no!” Littlefoot cried quietly, “they’re headed for the Great Valley!”
Chapter 7: The Great Valley Threat
The friends watched helplessly as the large Sharpteeth thudded away from them, they were safe now but their friends and family back in the Great Valley had no idea what was headed directly toward them!
“Tricia!” Cera suddenly yelled, struggling to wriggle herself free, “Dad!”
“Cera, stop!” Littlefoot blocked her path as she finally broke free and started to run after the Sharpteeth, “we can’t go back that way!”
“Well we can’t just stand here!” Cera shouted, desperate and afraid, “we gotta warn them!”
Spike, Petrie and Ducky emerged next.
“Momma..” Ducky cried softly.
“Guido!” Petrie squawked, “Mama!”
“Guys, don’t panic!” Littlefoot hushed them, “we’ve gotta come up with a plan, quick!”
“Someone has to go home and warn the others!” Cera suggested hurriedly, “Petrie!”
“Huh?” Petrie shook in fear, “m-m-me?”
“Yeah!” Littlefoot chimed in, “you could fly home and warn my Grampa!”
“B-B-By myself?!” Petrie stammered, fearfully.
“I’ll go with you, Petrie.” Ducky offered. Petrie still looked unsure, but he nodded and Ducky grabbed him while he tried to fly. It didn’t work, she was just too heavy for his little wings and he could hardly get off the ground.
“Now what?” Cera demanded, looking angrily at Littlefoot, “this is all your fault!”
Chapter 8: Echoes in the Mysterious Beyond
Not too far away, but far enough away to not be able to be of much help, Ruby and Chomper were high up on a ledge overlooking the whole scene below. They’d heard the baby’s wailing cry and the responding roars, so had come back to investigate.
Now, they both were alarmed as they watched the parent Sharpteeth leading their youngster toward the Great Valley.
“We need to do something!” Ruby cried fearfully, “but I don’t know something to do!”
Chomper thought hard, his face tinged pink for a moment and he looked up at Ruby uncertainly.
“I have an idea.” Chomper said quietly, “but..”
“But what, Chomper?” Ruby asked him, curious now.
“Well, it’s kind of embarrassing.” Chomper looked nervously back down at the scene below them.
“Whatever it is, Chomper,” Ruby put her hand on his shoulder, “if it saves the day, nobody will think anything less of you.”
Chomper sighed and nodded, reluctantly puffing out his chest. He leaned his head forward, opened his jaws wide and screamed out a long, loud, wailing baby cry of his own.
It worked! The parent Sharpteeth stopped and turned around, confused by the sudden cry of another little Sharptooth. From where Chomper stood, the sound carried perfectly across the chasm and echoed around the cliff walls.
Down below, the friends were shocked to hear another baby cry, too. They hurried back into their cramped hiding place as the Sharpteeth thundered past, followed quickly by their little one.
“At least they’re headed away from home.” Littlefoot breathed a sigh of relief.
“But what was that noise?” Cera wondered as they all spilled out of the tiny cave, “another baby Sharptooth?”
Chapter 9: Not Safe Yet
Littlefoot looked around, his eyes following the cliffs and suddenly he saw them.
“It’s Ruby and Chomper!” Littlefoot cried out, “they’re up on that ledge!”
“Chomper made that funny noise?” Cera looked bewildered.
“Oh no no no, no no!” Ducky was alarmed, “now the big Sharpteeth are going after Ruby and Chomper!”
It was true, the Sharpteeth had turned right around when they’d heard Chomper’s little baby cry, now they were searching for the source of the noise.
“We’re too far away to do anything!” Littlefoot spoke urgently.
“Petrie go home!” Petrie spoke up, feeling much braver now that Ruby and Chomper had distracted the adult Sharpteeth. He took off and flew as fast as he could toward the Great Valley to get help.
“He’s never going to make it in time!” Cera complained, “Ruby and Chomper will be lunch before anyone gets here!”
Littlefoot agreed but he knew there wasn’t anything they could do to help their friends right now, he could only hope Ruby and Chomper had some sort of plan to escape.
“Here they come.” Ruby spoke with worry in her voice.
“Now what do we do?” Chomper asked her, watching the adult Sharpteeth get closer and closer.
“We’ll sneak back down while they’re busy sniffing around.” Ruby said quietly, “come on, this way!”
Chomper gulped and nodded, following her quietly back down the winding path of the cliff.
Chapter 10: I Know You..
Petrie had made it back in record time, the adults were already forming together to come up with a plan but this would take time and time was something they simply didn’t have..
As they crept down the winding, narrow path of the cliff, Ruby and Chomper suddenly ran into the baby Sharptooth on the ground.
“He looks so much like you, I almost thought he was you!” Ruby spoke in amazement.
“Hey, he does look like me!” Chomper was not scared anymore and he walked closer to the little one.
The baby Sharptooth wasn’t scared of Chomper because they were both the same, he looked curiously at the slightly bigger Sharptooth and tilted his head. Chomper did the same and Ruby watched with a small smile as the two began to play a little game together.
She was torn, frozen between escaping with her life and staying with Chomper to make sure he wasn’t hurt. Chomper was giggling as the baby Sharptooth chased him around in small circles, it was so much fun he almost forgot the danger they were in.
“Uh-Oh!” Ruby glanced up as the parent Sharpteeth suddenly rounded the corner.
They looked down at Chomper and he looked up at them, recognition in everyone’s eyes now.
“It’s my folks!” Chomper cried out, relieved and happy.
Chomper’s parents settled down and Ruby closed her eyes, sighing heavily with relief.
As the adults nuzzled Chomper and the baby, they growled softly and Ruby wondered what on Earth they could be saying?
Chapter 11: Family
Chomper was giggling happily, dancing around in excitement.
“Chomper?” Ruby called over to him, “what’s going on? Why are your folks out here?”
“Ruby!” Chomper cried happily, “come and meet my new little brother!”
Ruby was astonished and she crept forward, she figured they must have come all this way just for Chomper to see his new baby sibling.
In the distance, Littlefoot, Cera, Ducky and Spike watched as the scary scene turned into a happy reunion.
“I think they’re Chomper’s parents.” Littlefoot gathered, relieved.
“I knew it all along!” Cera humphed, “I just didn’t want you all to look silly.”
Littlefoot rolled his eyes but he didn’t argue, he was just happy that nobody got hurt.
“So then, who is that baby Sharptooth?” Ducky wondered.
“I think it might be his new little brother.” Littlefoot figured, “and they just wanted Chomper to meet him.”
The gang stayed for a moment longer and smiled as they quietly turned back toward home. There was no danger here anymore, so they had to get back quickly to reassure the grownups of the Great Valley that the trouble had passed and everyone was safe now.
“I thought he was a little you, because he is a little you!” Ruby laughed.
Chomper looked at his new little brother, happy and excited because he rarely ever got to spend any time with other Sharpteeth.
“This is the best day, ever!” Chomper exclaimed, taking his little brother by the hands, “I’m gonna teach him so much stuff!”

Ruby smiled, she and Chomper had intended to surprise her parents today but they were the ones who had ended up being surprised.
